The Power of Love

I recently heard this quote in a rom-com movie: “You like because, and you love despite.”

I’ve been thinking about this quote and what it means. It packs so much truth and wisdom in a few words. The movie character expanded on it: “You like someone because of all their qualities, and you love them despite some of their qualities.”

This distinction between liking and loving makes a lot of sense. You can like many people, due to different qualities that you appreciate in them. However, love is a whole different entity. It allows you to feel deeply for someone despite them having some qualities that are not so great.

You love them despite them being imperfect. Love makes you not care about their negative qualities and focus more on their positive ones.

Even when you become painfully aware of their not-so-positive qualities you still love that person because you come to see many of their negative qualities as endearing quirks. You know in your heart that you wouldn’t want to change your person as a whole, quirks and all, for anything in this world.

Some of those less than positive qualities can also be quite toxic and negative. Thus, we need to be careful when falling in love because love will give us blind spots and rose-colored glasses. And sometimes we will stay with someone way longer than it is healthy for us.

Such is the power of love. It is a beautiful and intense feeling, but not without danger. Tread carefully.
